1. TIONG BAHRU YI SHENG FRIED HOKKIEN PRAWN MEE

ABC Brickworks Food Centre #01-03

Legend has it that the one of the island finest and oldest Hokkien Mee resides in one of the earliest food center built in the 1970s...

As the name indicated, Yi Sheng Hokkien Mee was once a popular mainstay in Tiong Bahru area run by an elderly couple who have dedicated their whole life into perfecting the skills of turning a plate of ordinary Hokkien Mee into something so tantalizing to the taste bud.

What's so legendary: The taste!!!

Don't be deterred by the long queue. This plate of Hokkien Mee is definitely worth the queue. First off, the taste won't disappoint, it is evenly cooked, thanks to the hard work of the uncle.

And as taste is subjective, even the harshest food critics would rate it decently well cooked to fantastic. My friend who is one of the harshest food critics i ever met, commented that the Hokkien Mee is not bad but there is one more stall that sells better Hokkien Mee. Hint hint, one more stall, does it mean that it is second best ; ).

For those who prefer to have more ingredients on your Hokkien Mee, you won't be disappoint, the standard Hokkien Mee comes with a couple of prawns.

But what is Hokkien Mee without the chili paste. For that, i am sorry, unable to comment cause i don't eat chili. But i believe the chili paste can't be too far too. :)

Things to take note: It will soon be a legend

As there is no apparent successor to this legendary plate of Hokkien Mee, like all good things, it will comes to an end. Catch your plate of sumptuous Hokkien Mee and register it flavour before it is too late.

2. NAN ZHEN SEAFOOD (南珍海鲜)

ABC Brickworks Food Centre #01-37

Legend has it that there is a hidden menu item in this small zi char store...

Good news Zi Char lover, Nan Zhen Seafood is a good ole Zi Char stall that serve value for money traditional zi char. Don't be deceived by the lack of queue and the traditional items in the menu. This stall is actually very popular among the locals living in that area because they make the ordinary taste extra-ordinary.

What's so legendary: Something that is not in the menu!

How often can you find local Zi Char stall serving you Hokkien Mee in ceramic pot that trapped the heat keeping your noodles and gravy warm. Top that off with the runny eggs and seafood added to the sea of black gravy. You would find yourself slurping down the wide but thin yellow noodles together with the gravy. By the moment you realized it, you had just finish 1 serving of it and are busy trawling the claypot with the ladle for another serving. Cause you just can't have enough ;)

Besides the claypot Hokkien Mee, it is worth exploring other dishes such as the Har Chiong Gai (Prawn Paste Fried Chicken), Kang Kong, Claypot Pig Liver and Clams. The harshest critic though feedback that the prawn paste taste is slightly lacking in the Har Chiong Gai.

Things to take note: Good things are worth the wait

Yes the waiting time could be long during peak period. But the good news is that they operate till as late as 1am. So if you do not like waiting, you know what to do. ;)
