1. JIAN BO SHUI KUEH

TIONG BAHRU MARKET #02-05

Legend has it that the best Shui Kueh, Chee Kueh or better known as rice cake lies in a market, surviving decades and multiple renovation and is one of the few that is hand-made.

First mention of good food in Tiong Bahru area, residents and pmets working in the area will mentioned the Shui Kueh/ Chi Kueh (Hokkien) at Tiong Bahru Market, Level 2, #02-05 that you die die have to visit. This good old stall have been there for decades, since 1974 and serving as the go-to-stall after a not so filling meal, to fill the tummy and satisfy the taste buds of diners.

What's so legendary: Everything.....Chai Poh to the Shui Kueh/ Chi Kueh

Yes, what's so legendary of this stall! The answer is simple. Everything!!! ; )
How often is it that you come across a stall in Singapore selling Shui Kueh/ Chi Kueh that are not instant/pre-made in factory.
And how do we tell, have we ask the auntie?
Nope, we didn't ask her but we are sure. Chai Poh that are instant are usually uniformly rectangular in shape and not fragrant. Jianbo Chai Poh is fragrant, yummy and even sweet in a way. Psst, it is a little oily though hehe.

And unlike Chi Kueh/Shui Kueh that are pre-made and harden, their Shui Kueh/Chi Kueh are very soft and to a small extent, melt in your mouth.

Combine with the Cai Poh, Mmmm.....heavenly......

But there is a small problem!

Look at the tooth-pick at the bottom of the picture. Yes, there it is, you will be using it to eat your Shui Kueh and because the shui kueh is so soft, it breaks apart very easily and the chai poh topping will usually top over, making it very frustrating to eat it without the cai poh.

2. HOT PLATE WESTERN FOOD (TAIWAN STYLE)
TIONG BAHRU MARKET LEVEL 2, #02-54

Legend has it that there is a western food stall that serves piping hot chicken chop that is coated with a layer of cheese

There are so many western food stalls in Singapore and getting a good plate chicken chop is just a stone throw away in Singapore. What distinguish itself to make its way into the heart of Tiong Bahru residents and PMETs working there, is essentially the taste and pricing which is a cut above the rest.

What's so legendary: Being piping hot and by piping hot, it is really hot, good seasoning and most importantly the cheeszeeee

Food taste best when it is freshly cooked. Remember the moment when your mom is cooking and how the aroma from the food is stimulating your appetite.

Hot plate western food achieve the effect of serving you a warm plate of western meal by maintaining the temperature on the hot plate.

The chicken chop is well marinated with black pepper sauce and the generous serving of cheese completed the icing to the cake.

If there is anything to complain, that will be the food being a bit too hot and you have to quickly scoop up your egg before it getting too burnt.

Also the chicken may not be sufficient for people with a larger appetite. But at $6 and so many things being thrown in, i will say that it's the cheapest in town and you cannot find a second stall like that easily.
