Legend has it that there is a famous Teochew Porridge Stall which is open 24/7 and sells yummy food at an unbelievable economical price.

For decades, in a coffeeshop near Henderson market, there is a Teochew Porridge stall which is boast a long line of queue even in wee hours of the night.  Because parking is so convenient and the food is extremely good and economical, ask any driver for late night supper spot and they would unanimously recommend Ye Shang Hai.

Managed and run by a friendly, tall elderly man in his 90s (or so he claimed), Ye Shang Hai has become a warm source of comfort food for late-night supper goer.  In 2017, Ye Shang Hai seems to be replaced by a similar Teochew Porridge Stall, Ye Lai Xiang in Henderson.  Many thought that they have ceased operation but thanksfully, the legendary stall has not become a legend yet.  It is merely shifted to a bigger coffeeshop in Lengkok Bahru.

What makes Ye Shang Hai so different from the many local Teochew Porridge stalls is that its food being able to maintain a very economical price while being delicious at the same time.  From the traditional peanuts, salted vegetables, salted eggs, tau pok to vegetables, ducks and fishes, there is no lack of variety here.

As with all places, there are a few signature dishes which you may not be able to find elsewhere like the potato slices below, which has just the right (smooth) texture and savoury mind-blowing taste which literally melt in your mouth.

The minced meat is another must-order dish.  By itself, it may be a little salty for me, but couple it with the porridge and it will bring out a very satisfying taste which leave you sipping all the minced meat in no time.

To me, my personal favorite is the lady fingers which is well-cooked,not too hard and have a tinge of spiciness to spice-up my deep lying appetite monster.  The meat-ball is also one of my must-have, personally because it is well marinated.

However, your experience will never be complete if you have never try the fishes.

What's so legendary: Bringing you one of the freshest, piping hot steamed fishes at a very economical price

This is one of the rare few places that serve fish so fresh while keeping the price affordable.  A fish as big as the below which would cost usually much more elsewhere is priced only $13-$17 here.

Food taste the best when it is hot.  Ye Shang Hai recognized that and go the extra mile to steam the fishes to bring you piping hot steamed fishes to your table.

Couple that to their Chin-Char Lok (Slight sweet, sour and spicy) sauce and it will bring the best of the fishes.

Things to take note: Not much variation on the gravy of the steamed fishes

Yup, though the steamed fishes are amazing.  There aren't other variety of gravy e.g. black to go along with your fishes.  So this is something which you would not be able to eat everyday.
